11. ManCan

Hart Main was 13 years old when he observed that the candles his sister was selling weren’t very good to attract people. She sister was doing it for a fundraiser but it wasn’t manly enough. Hart thought of taking it one step ahead and his parents also encouraged him to run with the idea. He invested $100 and made candles. The candles smell like coffee, bacon, and a baseball mitt. He makes the candles out of soup cans. This product also serves a dual purpose and the cans are donated to soup kitchens across Ohio, before cleaning the recycled cans and using them for the candles. One summer in 1922, the 18-year-old Ralph Samuelson questioned why you couldn’t ski on water if you could do it on snow. Ralph and his brother tested out his ideas on a local lake. The successful skis were made out of lumber with leather strips to bind them to his feet. He kept improving his technique until he discovered the key to successful skiing and it was leaning backward and keeping the skis at an angle.

In 1966, Ralph was recognized as the first recorded water skier by the American Water Ski Association.
