Abdul Sattar Edhi – A Great Human Being Left The World at the age of 88.

Abdul Sattar Edhi was a prominent Pakistani Philanthropist, social activist, ascetic and humanitarian.

He was the founder and head of Edhi Foundation in Pakistan. He was also known as “Angel of Mercy” and was considered Pakistan’s most respected and legendary public figure. The Huffington Post said he might be “the world’s greatest living humanitarian.”

Abdul Sattar Edhi resolved to dedicate his life to aiding poor, and in the past 60 years, he single-handedly changed the face of welfare in Pakistan. Edhi was inspired by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Mother Teresa and he was often referred as Pakistan’s Mother Teresa. The Edhi Foundation, founded by Edhi, runs the world’s largest ambulance service (operating 1,500 of them) and offers 24-hour emergency services.

It also operates free nursing homes, orphanages, clinics, women’s shelters, and rehab centers for drug addicts and mentally ill individuals.

In 2013, Abdul Sattar Edhi was diagnosed with kidney failure and has been ill since then. Earlier on Friday, his son, Faisal Edhi told stated that his father was in a critical condition in an intensive care unit of Karachi Hospital. Later in the evening, he faced difficult to breathe so Doctors had to put him on a ventilator and he passed away late at night.

Edhi’s funeral on Saturday is expected to be one of the biggest in Pakistan’s history.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif said “We have lost a great servant of humanity. He was the real manifestation of love for those who were socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless and poor.”

“He was a noble soul who dedicated his life in service of mankind.” said Sushma Swaraj.

Pakistanis took to Twitter to mourn the death of a national hero many call a “living saint” and “Pakistan’s Mother Teresa”.

“In his death, he has united all of the Pakistan, across all affiliations, in mourning. That in itself is a measure of his greatness.” said a Twitter user named Imran Khan.

Nadeem Farooq Paracha tweeted “Edhi’s war was against prejudice, cruelty. No politics, no fatwas, no greed. Just humanity for the sake of humanity.”
