With all the chaos and excitement around the final season of Game Of Thrones, Chernobyl sure has gone unnoticed if it wasn’t for critics and fans. Surprisingly now it has a rating of 9.7/10 on IMDb which is higher than GOT. Let’s have a look what got it that position.
1. Its close connection to true events
The series only has 5 episodes of 1 hour each. We all know what happened in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on 26th April 1986. The show has started out an in-depth background check and mostly surrounds around the aftermath of the disaster on the local people’s lives.
2. The director worked really hard
Johan Renck has worked in many great projects like Breaking Bad, Vikings, and The Walking Dead. He is quite experienced and wanted to keep Chernobyl as real as possible. The screenwriter Craig Mazin has been studying the incident since 2014. He has read every article and books related to Chernobyl radioactive emission.
3. The Cast
Mazin did not have to look very far for the cast. Everyone, he offered the roles to happily accepted them. You see Jarred Harris from Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows playing the role of Soviet nuclear physicist.
Stellan Skarsgard from Pirates of the Caribbean and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo plays the role of Boris Shcherbina who is the vice chairman of the Council of Ministers in USSR.
4. The background music
The music is really important in any movie or show. As everything in ‘Chernobyl’ is extracted from real life events, the music composer Hildur Gudnadottir went to the deserted Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. In many parts of the area, she recorded some very unique and strange sounds which later became the background music of the series.
5. Realistic setup
To give the whole set up a realistic look to bring out the events that actually happened at that time most of it was shot in Lithuania. Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is almost 100% similar to the real Chernobyl power plant. They also managed to find an open area near Vilnius which is very closely similar to Pripyat.
6. Keeping in mind the little details
Anyone born in the Soviet Union while watching the series will say that they had the same things. The mass production during that time proved advantages for the filmmakers as they could use the products from that exact time. Although actors speak English in their own accent, the loudspeaker, emergency calls, or the radios and TV announce everything in Russian.
7. The captivating interest in the tragedy
It is not a cult horror series but the emotionally draining events will make you shiver and your blood turns cold. After the broadcast of the series, people from all around the world have taken a major interest in finding out the truth about the massacre.
They are reading articles, searching on the internet and trying every possible method to understand what actually happened there.
