Most of us are confident, talk funny and silly things but when we start talking about our personal things, be it our body, personality, choices or our own ways, we tend to shame ourselves. We seem to use sentences like “I am the worst.” “I know I am just like every other person.” and “I hate myself.” So why have we really developed this ridiculous trend of shaming ourselves in front of others?

Here are a few major reasons Why We Are Obsessed With Shaming Ourselves

1. Shaming ourselves is a way of acknowledging that failure before someone else does. It’s the reason some people make self-deprecating jokes or call themselves ugly.

2. Movies and Reality TV’s  so often use overweight characters’ bodies as the basis of many of the show’s jokes.  It has become the norm to criticize aspects of our bodies as some type of bonding experience with friends – if we all hate our bodies; it somehow makes us feel connected and united.

3. We shame ourselves because we are told that if we aren’t meeting some unrealistic idea of perfection, we are failing. Shaming ourselves is a way of acknowledging that failure before someone else does. It’s the reason some people make self-deprecating jokes or call themselves ugly. Maybe on some level, we do really believe these awful things about ourselves—or maybe we just fear the worst of what others may think about us.
