Eleanor Roosevelt was born Anna Eleanor Roosevelt to elite socialites Elliot and Anna Roosevelt. Eleanor’s mother died in 1882, and her father died two years later, leading her to be adopted by her maternal grandmother, Mary Livingston Ludlow.
