Every business has its own tricks and secrets to be a successful one. With growing restaurants and competitions each one is trying to be better than the other. They might give out confectionery or drink just to make you stay longer.
1. Tables with a view are only for those who come for meals
If you are there only for coffee or pizza you are not getting the table by the view.
2. No menu for children
This is a trick when the waiter comes up and says that you can order something from the regular menu for the child but it will come in half the price and size. All the price is said to be half they still keep a margin for profit.
3. Waiters should not let their hair down, apply bright makeup or wear jewellery
This is done to make sure that customers don’t find a piece of jewellery or hair in their food. Also, very good looking waiters are not hired as customers do not want waiters to look better than them.
4. Free treats from chef
A free appetizer makes you want to eat more and a free dessert makes you order a coffee or tea. Additionally, when you are getting free treats you feel obliged to tip more.
5. Pastry shops display whole cakes while in a restaurant they are cut
It is human psychology that when we see a piece cut out from a cake we assume that it has to be tasty which increases our desire to order. But in pastry shops, people go to buy a whole cake.
6. Recipe from the chef and unusual names given to regular food
Both of these are done to make the customers think that the dish is something fancy so that the price could be raised.
7. Bringing a free lemonade with the menu
After this obviously, you cannot leave the restaurant even if you find the prices on the menu to be unbelievable. A fresh cold lemonade makes you hungry and want to eat something hot. This is one of the most used tricks.
8. The size of the plate depends on the place and the food you order
Cafes use a smaller plate which looks full with a small amount of food so that they can trick our brain into believing that we are full faster. This kind of tricks is used in cafes, burger places and buffets. But restaurants serve the main dish in bigger plates making you order desserts.
9. Ordering one drink but ultimately paying for two
Remember when you order and they ask you if you want mineral water or still or sparkling water? If you don’t mention that you want regular tap water you will end up paying even for water.
10. Keeping the most expensive dish on the top
As when you go downwards you feel that the others are less expensive which are actually not. If you ask for the top dish they will probably tell you that they are out of ingredients because that is just for show.
11. Waiters can tell what customers will order based on appearance
Waiters who have been in this field for long can tell by the appearance and behaviour of a customer what they are going to order.
12. Waiters are able to control your actions with a smile or nod
This is called Sullivan nod. When they want you to order a particular dish they gesture it through a smile, leaning forward and slowly nodding head. The customer tends to nod the head in response and order the dish which they never planned to. This is one of the tricks not many people know about.
