“I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.” – Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali, one of the “only” Boxing legends to have set foot on the face of Earth, passed today. Like me, millions of his fans will mourn his demise for days, weeks and months. After all, it is a big big void that seems unfillable.
There are some things about him that make him rise above each of his contemporaries’ shoulders. It would only be a tribute to reminisce some of his legends today.
Originally named Cassius Clay, the name Muhammad Ali was bestowed upon him by the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. Only 18 years old and straight out of high school, normal kids get pensive and look for career options, Ali on the other hand, goes to Rome and wins a light heavyweight Olympic Gold Medal! This was the year 1960 and about time the world started to know what force Ali will turn into.
“I don’t count my sit-ups, I only start counting when it starts hurting when I feel pain, that’s when I start counting, because that’s when it really counts.”
Like all great boxers, Ali also had a running rivalry with his fellow boxers. Joe Frazier was his favorite among others to catch on a feud. He always brought out the best him in and Ali admitted that himself.
“Frazier is so ugly that when he cries, the tears turn around and go down the back of his head.”
Like they say, don’t be a boxer if you aren’t cocky!
Such was Ali’s popularity that even the gloves that he wore to beat Sonny Liston, earned him more bucks than the prize money he received from the victory itself!
Who else can recreate the magic Ali spelled when he knocked Liston down, demanding him to get up and fight back on? Well, if at all you come across someone who wants to know more about Muhammad Ali, just show him this picture and you are done!
“If you dream of beating me, you’d better wake up and apologize.”
R.I.P. Ali. No one can say you are at a better place now because you made this planet your home!
