However, when Disney announced that they have selected Halle Bailey to star in the title role of Ariel in the film The Little Mermaid, it did not go down well with everybody.
Specifically, it is the white community that was indignant at the selection of Halle Bailey as their favorite fictional character.
In fact, Twitter was awash with the angst of a community of people who can be best described as clinging to the legacy of apartheid than anything else.

Most people were kind of elated that with misquotations by certain website regarding Halle Berry has got the opportunity to introduce herself to a new generation of fans of Ariel.
However, all the social media cacophony about Halle Berry being chosen to play Ariel subdued once it was clear to everybody that this is not the same girl that they were all thinking. This really caused a meltdown on social media platforms which were so far awash with posts casting aspersions on Halle Bailey and her talent to play the role of Ariel.
The backlash did not die down completely since Halle Bailey too is black. In fact, the hashtag #NotMyAriel was trending on Twitter long after the clarification from Disney.
